Case IH 19727 – ENGINE Control Module (ECM / EDC): Positive deviation of rail pressure under fast condition exceeded for tank lo detection

Issue description

The common rail fuel pressure is higher than the commanded/expected pressure during a fast transient condition, specifically flagged when the fuel tank level is detected as low. This indicates the fuel metering unit or high-pressure pump is supplying more fuel pressure than requested, or the rail pressure sensor is reporting an inaccurately high value.

Check the cause

  1. Verify physical fuel level, as low fuel can introduce air into the system and mimic a failing sensor.

  2. Monitor live rail pressure data with a diagnostic scanner, comparing actual vs. commanded pressure at cranking, idle, and under load.

  3. Check the Fuel Metering Unit (FCA) duty cycle and correction factors for sticking.

  4. Inspect the rail pressure sensor wiring harness for damage, heat wear, or poor connections.

  5. Perform a leak-down test by shutting off the engine at operating temperature and monitoring how quickly rail pressure drops.

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Supply Issues

    Fill the fuel tank and bleed the low-pressure fuel system to ensure no air is trapped in the lines. Clear the code and test run the machine.

  2. Inspect the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV)

    The PRV is located on the fuel rail and is designed to bleed off pressure if it gets too high. If the valve is leaking or stuck open/closed, it will cause pressure deviations. If it fails a leak-down test, replace the PRV.

  3. Test/Replace the Fuel Metering Unit

    If scanner data shows the system cannot control pressure because fuel metering is failing, the metering unit on the high-pressure pump is the likely culprit and must be replaced.

  4. Test/Replace the Rail Pressure Sensor

    If the truck drives normally but the scanner shows commanded and actual pressures moving in ways that do not make sense (intermittent signal dropouts or false high readings), replace the rail pressure sensor.

  5. Clear and Verify

    After replacing the faulty component, use the diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes. Test drive the machine under load to ensure the actual rail pressure matches the commanded pressure and the code does not return.
