Case IH 19731 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Maximum rail pressure exceeded - overrun detection

This fault code indicates that the fuel rail pressure has exceeded the maximum allowable limit during an "overrun" condition. Overrun occurs when the engine is decelerating or being driven by the vehicle's momentum. During overrun, the engine control system typically cuts off fuel injection. If the high-pressure fuel pump continues to supply excessive fuel to the rail during this time, or if the pressure cannot be relieved, the rail pressure spikes, triggering this code.

   Check the Fuel Metering Unit (MeUn / FCA) for loose contacts, wiring harness damage, or a short to battery/ground

   Check the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor raw voltage/pressure values via the EST to ensure it is not reading falsely high

   Check the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) for companion codes (e.g., 3799, 3800) indicating it was forced open or is stuck closed

   Perform a fuel return flow test to check for restrictions in the fuel return lines back to the tank

   Verify the Fault

   Connect the EST and check for active fault codes and freeze-frame data to confirm the conditions under which 19731 was logged.

   Inspect Wiring

   Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the Fuel Metering Unit on the high-pressure pump and the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor. Repair any chafed wires or corroded pins.

   Test Return Flow

   Disconnect the fuel return line and measure the return flow. If restricted, clear the blockage in the lines or fuel tank.

   Test/Replace the Fuel Metering Unit

   If the wiring is intact and return flow is normal, the fuel metering unit is likely sticking open during deceleration. Replace the fuel metering unit (or the high-pressure pump assembly if the unit is not serviced separately).

   Test/Replace the Rail Pressure Sensor

   If the metering unit is functioning properly, the rail pressure sensor may be providing erratic or false high readings. Replace the sensor.

   Inspect the Pressure Relief Valve

   If the system actually experienced a massive over-pressure event, the PRV may have been damaged or weakened. It is highly recommended to replace the PRV if a severe over-pressure condition is confirmed.

   Clear and Test

   Clear the fault codes using the EST. Test drive the machine, specifically forcing overrun conditions (accelerate and then completely lift off the throttle) to ensure the code does not return.
