Case IH 19732 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Maximum positive deviation of rail pressure exceeded

Issue description

The engine's actual fuel rail pressure is significantly lower than the target (commanded) pressure. This indicates fuel starvation, meaning the high-pressure pump cannot deliver enough fuel to meet the engine's demand.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Steiger
  • Quadtrac
  • Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • 2188
  • Patriot

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the fuel tank is not empty or critically low.

  2. Check the fuel suction lines for bends, crimps, or restrictions, and inspect for any air leaks or fuel leaks in the low-pressure delivery lines.

  3. Inspect the high-pressure fuel lines, fuel rail, and injector connections for visible leaks.

  4. Inspect the primary fuel filter/water separator and the secondary 'baby' filter for severe clogging or water contamination.

  5. Check for excessive fuel leakage from the rail return line while the engine is running, which indicates a stuck-open pressure relief valve or a leaking injector.

Repair steps

  1. Arrest Leaks

If any leaks were found in the low-pressure or high-pressure circuits during the diagnostic checks, repair or replace the affected lines.

  2. Replace Fuel Filters

Remove and replace the main fuel filter/water separator (Part No. FS19732) and clean or replace the secondary filter. A choked filter is the most common cause of this fault.

  3. Bleed the System

Prime the fuel system to ensure all air is bled from the lines.

  4. Test the Rail/Injectors

If the fault persists after filter replacement, perform an injector leak-off test. If an injector nozzle plunger is stuck open, it will bleed off rail pressure. Replace any faulty injectors.

  5. Test the High-Pressure Pump

If the injectors and rail pressure relief valve are functioning correctly, the high-pressure pump may be failing to deliver fuel. Remove the pump and have it tested or rebuilt by an authorized dealer.

  6. Clear Codes

Connect the diagnostic tool, clear the ECM fault codes, and test run the machine under load to verify the repair.
