Case IH 19736 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Minimum rail pressure exceeded
Issue description
A negative deviation in the high-pressure fuel system indicating that the actual fuel pressure in the common rail has dropped below the minimum required threshold commanded by the engine mapping, often forcing the engine into a derated limp home mode.

Check the cause
Check the wiring harness and terminals at the fuel rail pressure sensor and the fuel metering unit for contact resistance, corrosion, or deformation.
Inspect the low-pressure fuel pump relay. Measure the resistance between the relay coil terminals (85 and 86); it should read approximately 95Ω ± 10%. Measure the contact terminals (30 and 87) to ensure there is discontinuity when off, and continuity (below 1.0 Ω) when actuated.
Verify that the low-pressure fuel pump is supplying adequate fuel to the high-pressure pump. Inspect all high-pressure fuel lines and the common rail for physical leaks.
Check the primary and secondary fuel filters for severe clogging or water contamination, which can restrict flow and cause a pressure drop.
Repair steps
Key Off
Turn the ignition key to "OFF" and ensure the engine is completely shut down before working on the high-pressure fuel system.
Relay Replacement
If the fuel pump relay fails the multimeter resistance test (e.g., the coil is open/infinite ohms), replace the relay.
Filter Service
Replace the primary fuel filter/water separator and the secondary fuel filter to rule out fuel starvation. Bleed the fuel system according to the operator's manual to ensure no air is trapped in the lines.
Component Testing
Use a diagnostic service tool to monitor the fuel metering unit (MeUn) setpoint and the actual rail pressure during cranking and running.
Metering Unit / Sensor Replacement
If the wiring is intact but the metering unit output shows a short circuit (to battery or ground) or the setpoint remains implausible, replace the fuel metering unit (M-Prop valve) on the high-pressure pump. If the rail pressure sensor is stuck at a default value (e.g., defaulting to a static reading that causes white smoke on cold start), replace the rail pressure sensor.
Clear and Test
Clear the fault codes from the ECU and test drive the machine under load to verify the actual rail pressure now meets the commanded setpoint without dropping below the minimum threshold.
