Case IH 19751 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Maximum rail pressure exceeded (second stage)

Issue description

A severe overpressure condition in the high-pressure common rail fuel system where the fuel rail pressure has exceeded the maximum allowable safety limit by a significant margin or for a prolonged duration, surpassing the first-stage warning threshold.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • Puma
  • Maxxum
  • Farmall
  • 621E
  • 621F
  • 621G
  • 721E
  • 721F
  • 721G
  • Excavators

Check the cause

  1. Check the Fuel Metering Unit (FCA / M-PROP) to see if it is stuck in the open position, verify it is receiving power, and check the wiring harness for a short circuit to the battery or ground.

  2. Inspect the Rail Pressure Sensor and its connector for an open circuit, short circuit, or loose contact that could report falsely high pressure values.

  3. Check the low-pressure fuel system, including fuel filters and the zero-delivery throttle, for clogs or abnormally high pressure.

  4. Inspect the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) on the common rail, as it was likely forced open during the overpressure event and may fail to reseat properly.

  5. Ensure the injector backflow and fuel return lines are not blocked or restricted.

Repair steps

  1. Verify Sensor Data

Connect a diagnostic scan tool (such as the CNH EST) and monitor the live rail pressure raw values. Compare the commanded rail pressure setpoint against the actual rail pressure.

  2. Inspect Wiring

Visually and electrically test the wiring harness between the ECU, the Rail Pressure Sensor, and the Fuel Metering Unit. Repair any chafed wires or loose pins.

  3. Test the Fuel Metering Unit

Use the diagnostic tool to command the metering unit. If the unit is unresponsive or stuck open, remove and replace the Fuel Metering Unit on the high-pressure pump.

  4. Replace the Pressure Relief Valve (if triggered)

If the diagnostic tool indicates the PRV reached its maximum allowed opening count or was forced open during the overpressure event, the PRV must be replaced, as it is a one-time-use safety device in many common rail systems.

  5. Clear and Retest

Clear the fault codes, bleed the fuel system if necessary, and run the engine under load to verify that the rail pressure now matches the ECU's commanded setpoint without exceeding limits.
