Case IH 19779 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ECM): Irregular switch off or reset of ECU without completely shutdown - not repairable

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU/ECM) experienced a sudden loss of power or an unexpected reset before it could complete its normal shutdown sequence.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • FPT engines
  • F5C engine family
  • NEF engine family
  • Tier 3
  • Tier 4a
  • Case N-Series Tractor Loader Backhoes (TLBs)
  • Case IH tractors

Check the cause

  1. Verify operator habits to ensure the master battery disconnect switch is not being used immediately after turning off the ignition key

  2. Inspect the battery terminals, ground straps, and main power cables for loose, corroded, or damaged connections

  3. Test the main ECU power relay and starter relay for signs of sticking, internal resistance, or an open load condition

  4. Inspect the wiring harness supplying unswitched 12-volt power to the ECU for chafing, shorts to ground, or broken wires

  5. Check the ignition switch for internal faults that might be cutting power erratically

Repair steps

  1. Secure Power Connections

Clean all battery posts and cable terminals. Tighten all ground connections to the chassis and engine block to ensure a stable voltage supply to the ECU.

  2. Replace Faulty Relays

If the main ECU power relay is found to be dropping voltage or sticking, replace it with a new OEM relay.

  3. Repair Wiring

Splice and heat-shrink any damaged sections of the ECU power supply wiring harness.

  4. Perform a Clean Shutdown

Start the machine, let it idle, and turn the ignition key to the OFF position. Do not disconnect the battery or use the master kill switch. Wait at least 60 seconds to allow the ECU to save its data and power down its internal stages properly.

  5. Clear the Code

Once a clean shutdown is achieved, use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive 19779 fault code from the ECU memory.

Parts you might need

(4)
  • ECU Main Power Relay

Fitment: Check specific model parts catalog for the main cab/engine fuse box.

  • Battery Cables / Terminals

  • Ignition Switch

  • Engine Control Unit (ECU)

Only required in extremely rare cases where the internal power stage of the ECU has been permanently damaged by repeated voltage spikes or sudden power loss.
