19781

Case IH 19781 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Vehicle Control Module (VCM) / Dosing Control Unit (DCU): Customer Hard Inducement: Level 3 (creep mode), triggered by SCR system related fault

Issue description

This is a software-enforced emissions derate, not a specific hardware failure. It means the engine control system has detected a critical issue with the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) / Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) system—such as an empty DEF tank, poor fluid quality, dosing failure, or tampering—and the operator has ignored the initial warning stages for a prolonged period (typically over 4 hours). To force compliance with emissions regulations, the system restricts engine power and limits the vehicle to "Creep Mode" (idle or very low speed).

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Tier 4 Final equipment
  • Stage V equipment
  • Steiger
  • Magnum
  • Puma
  • Optum
  • Maxxum
  • Axial-Flow Combines
  • N-Series Loader Backhoes

Check the cause

  1. Read All Codes: Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and pull all active fault codes to find the accompanying root cause code (e.g., DEF level low, DEF quality poor, NOx sensor failure, dosing valve blocked).

  2. Check DEF Fluid: Verify the DEF/AdBlue tank is not empty. Use a refractometer to test the DEF quality; it must be exactly 32.5% urea.

  3. Visual Inspection: Inspect the DEF dosing valve, supply module, and wiring harnesses for physical damage, leaks, crystallization, or blockages.

Repair steps

  1. Repair the Root Cause

Diagnose and repair the primary hardware fault identified by the EST in your diagnostic checks (e.g., drain and refill contaminated DEF, replace a faulty NOx sensor, or unclog the DEF injector).

  2. Clear Primary Codes

Clear the root cause fault codes using the EST.

  3. Reset the Inducement Timer

Because Level 3 Inducement is a "locked" state, simply fixing the hardware and cycling the key will not clear code 19781. You must use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to perform an SCR system reset / Inducement reset.

  4. System Validation

Run the engine through a complete aftertreatment validation cycle (or a forced dosing test via the EST). This allows the ECU to verify the SCR system is functioning correctly and NOx conversion is within legal limits.

  5. Clear 19781

Once the ECU validates the repair, it will lift the Level 3 Creep Mode and code 19781 will move to an inactive state, allowing you to clear it.
