Case IH 19783 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC) or Dosing Control Unit (DCU): Customer Moderate Inducement: Level 1 (Torque reduction), triggered by fault

Issue description

This is an emissions inducement code. It means the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system has detected an underlying emissions-related failure (such as poor DEF/AdBlue quality, low DEF level, or a failed NOx sensor). To force the operator to fix the issue and comply with emissions regulations, the system initiates a Level 1 inducement, which actively derates the engine (typically a 50% torque reduction).

Check the cause

  1. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to read all active and stored fault codes to identify the root cause code (e.g., NOx sensor plausibility codes like 3528, DEF quality codes, or dosing valve errors).

  2. Test the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF / AdBlue) level and quality using a refractometer to ensure the fluid is at the required ~32.5% urea concentration and is not contaminated with water or diesel.

  3. Visually inspect the SCR system components (NOx sensors, DEF dosing module, DEF lines, and exhaust system) for physical damage, leaks, or crystallization/blockages.

Repair steps

  1. Identify the Root Cause

    Using your diagnostic tool, identify the specific component causing the root fault code.

  2. Perform the Physical Repair

    Depending on the root cause, perform the necessary repair. This may involve: Draining contaminated DEF, flushing the tank, and refilling with fresh fluid; Replacing a faulty upstream or downstream NOx sensor; Replacing a clogged DEF filter or a failed DEF dosing unit.

  3. Clear Fault Codes

    Once the physical repair is complete, use the diagnostic tool to clear the active and stored fault codes.

  4. Perform an Inducement Reset

    You must perform an SCR system reset, often called a 'Startup counter reset' or 'Inducement reset,' using the diagnostic tool. If this software reset is not performed, the engine control module will keep the machine in torque reduction mode even though the physical parts have been fixed.
