Issue description

This code indicates that the emissions system has detected an interruption in the injection of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) into the exhaust stream. Because the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system cannot reduce NOx emissions without DEF, the system automatically triggers a 'Level 1 Inducement.' This is a regulatory emissions strategy that forces an engine torque reduction (derate) to prompt the operator to repair the dosing issue.

Check the cause

  1. Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for other active fault codes (e.g., failed DEF pump, blocked line, or faulty pressure sensor) to identify the root cause.

  2. Visually inspect the DEF dosing valve (injector) on the exhaust decomposition tube for heavy white urea crystallization that could be physically blocking the nozzle.

  3. Inspect the DEF supply and return lines for kinks, leaks, or blockages.

  4. Use the diagnostic service tool to perform a DEF Dosing Unit Override Test or flow test to verify if the supply module can build pressure and if the dosing valve is spraying.

Repair steps

  1. Safely Shut Down

    Turn off the engine and leave the battery switch on for at least 2–3 minutes. The DEF system must complete its automatic purge cycle to pull fluid out of the lines and back into the tank. Once purged, disconnect the battery power.

  2. Remove and Clean the Dosing Valve

    Disconnect the 8-pin electrical connector and the DEF lines from the dosing valve. Remove the valve from the exhaust pipe. If crystallized urea is blocking the nozzle, clean it using a lint-free cloth and warm distilled water. Do not use wire brushes, diesel fuel, or harsh chemicals, as these will permanently damage the Bosch Denoxtronic components.

  3. Service the DEF Supply Module (Pump)

    Locate the DEF supply module. Thoroughly clean the exterior of the housing to prevent dirt from falling into the pump.

  4. Replace the DEF Filter

    Remove the filter cap. Use the specialized extraction tool (usually included with the new filter kit) to pull out the old DEF primary filter element without scratching the inner walls of the pump housing. Insert the new filter and reinstall the cap.

  5. Reassemble and Prime

    Reinstall the dosing valve and reconnect all lines and electrical harnesses. Reconnect the battery.

  6. System Validation

    Connect the CNH EST diagnostic tool and run a DEF system prime and dosing test. Once the ECU verifies that DEF pressure is built and dosing has successfully resumed, the Level 1 torque reduction inducement will deactivate, and the 19787 code will move to an inactive state where it can be cleared.
