Case IH 19788 (F-5840-00) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): SCR Inducement: Level 3 (creep mode), triggered by DEF/AdBlue dosing interruption fault

Issue description

The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system has detected an interruption in the dosing (injection) of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF/AdBlue) into the exhaust stream. Because the emissions system is failing to operate correctly, the system triggers a 'Level 3 Inducement' (creep mode). This severely derates the engine—often limiting it to low idle, 60% of rated RPMs, and a 50% torque reduction—to force the operator to repair the emissions fault. In severe cases, the machine may only allow 30-second emergency restarts to move the equipment out of the way.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the DEF tank is not empty and that the fluid is not contaminated, as low levels or poor quality DEF can trigger related inducement codes.

  2. Check the DEF dosing valve (injector) for physical blockages, urea crystallization, or open/short circuits in the wiring harness.

  3. Test the DEF supply module (pump) pressure to ensure it continually builds and maintains approximately 130 psi (9 bar) to the DEF injector.

  4. Inspect all DEF lines and hoses for leaks or blockages, and ensure correct routing (especially the red band heater line on Fargo-built tractors which can overheat the DEF tank if routed incorrectly).

  5. Check the DEF tank heater control valve to see if it is sticking intermittently, preventing thawing or causing overheating.

Repair steps

  1. Resolve the Interruption Source

    If the DEF doser injector is clogged or electrically failed, replace it. If the DEF supply module is failing to build the required 130 psi pressure, replace the supply module pump. If the heater control valve is sticking, replace the valve and correct any improperly routed coolant lines.

  2. Clear the Fault Codes

    Once the mechanical repair is complete, the codes must be cleared.

  3. Reset the Inducement Timer

    If the inducement system has locked the engine (e.g., due to 3 detections in 40 hours), simply clearing the code will not work. The system must be reset using the dealer Electronic Service Tool (EST) by navigating to the 'Engine Restart Counter Reset' screen.

  4. Run a Dosing Test

    Use the dealer service tool to run a manual DEF dosing test to verify that the system is building pressure and the injector is spraying correctly.
