Case IH 1979-00 - UCM – UCM: Rear pilot head #6 actuator temperature high
Issue description
The UCM has detected an abnormally high temperature in the electronic actuator head of the #6 rear remote valve (Electro-Hydraulic Remote or EHR). This condition typically arises from an internal electrical short or failure, a mechanical bind in the hydraulic spool valve, a failed internal temperature sensor, or general hydraulic system overheating.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Magnum AFS Connect (models 180 through 400)
- Steiger AFS Connect series
Check the cause
Verify the tractor's hydraulic oil level and check if the overall hydraulic oil temperature is running too hot (address general overheating first).
Inspect the wiring harness and connector going to the #6 rear remote valve for melted wires, corrosion, or signs of a short circuit to ground or power.
Perform a swap test: swap the electrical connection of the #6 actuator with an adjacent known-good remote (e.g., #4 or #5). If the fault moves, the actuator is internally faulty. If it stays at #6, the issue is in the wiring or UCM.
With the tractor off and hydraulic pressure relieved, manually check if the spool valve moves freely to rule out a mechanical bind causing the actuator to overwork.
Repair steps
Relieve Pressure
Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, turn off the engine, and cycle the remote levers/buttons to relieve all residual hydraulic pressure.
Disconnect Battery
Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.
Remove the Actuator
Disconnect the electrical harness from the #6 rear remote valve. Remove the retaining bolts holding the electronic actuator (pilot head) to the mechanical valve slice.
Inspect the Spool
Before installing a new actuator, ensure the mechanical spool in the valve body moves smoothly and is free of debris or scoring.
Install New Part
Mount the new EHR actuator head onto the valve section and torque the retaining bolts to the manufacturer's specification. Reconnect the electrical harness.
Recalibrate
Reconnect the battery and power on the tractor. Use the AFS Pro 1200 display or the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive 1979-00 fault code.
EHR Calibration
You must perform the EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) valve calibration procedure via the AFS Connect monitor so the UCM can learn the neutral, extend, and retract limits of the new actuator.
