19792

Case IH 19792 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Inducement Level 3 is active due to Low DEF/AdBlue Level

Issue description

This code indicates that the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) / AdBlue tank has reached a critically low level, triggering an Inducement Level 3 severe engine derate (creep mode) which restricts the engine to low idle or limits vehicle speed until the DEF fluid is replenished.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Axial-Flow Combines (240 Series)
  • N-Series Loaders / Backhoes
  • Magnum Tractors
  • Steiger Tractors
  • Puma Tractors
  • Optum Tractors
  • Farmall Tractors

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the DEF/AdBlue tank to confirm if it is actually empty.

  2. Ensure the DEF fluid is not contaminated, crystallized, or degraded, as poor fluid quality can damage the sending unit.

  3. Inspect the DEF tank and lines for physical leaks.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness and connector going to the DEF Head Unit (tank level sensor) for corrosion, moisture, or broken wires.

  5. Use a diagnostic scan tool to monitor the live data for the DEF tank level. If the tank is physically full but the sensor reads empty, the DEF level sensor (head unit) has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Refill the DEF Tank

Fill the DEF tank with fresh, high-quality Diesel Exhaust Fluid.

  2. Cycle the Key

Turn the ignition key to the ON position (without starting the engine) and wait several minutes to allow the DEF level sensor to register the new fluid level.

  3. Clear the Code

If the fluid level registers correctly, use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the fault code. Note: Exiting Inducement Level 3 often requires the system to be fault-free and may require a specific reset procedure or drive cycle via the service tool to restore full engine power.

  4. Replace the Sensor (If Applicable)

If the tank is full but the gauge still reads empty and the wiring is intact, the DEF Head Unit (level sensor) is faulty and must be replaced.

  5. Disconnect Battery

    Disconnect the battery.

  6. Disconnect Harness and Lines

Disconnect the electrical harness and DEF lines from the top of the DEF tank head unit.

  7. Remove DEF Head Unit

Unbolt the flange securing the DEF head unit to the tank and carefully extract the assembly.

  8. Install New DEF Head Unit

Install the new DEF head unit, ensuring the gasket/O-ring is properly seated to prevent leaks.

  9. Finalize Installation

Reconnect the lines and harness, refill the tank, and clear the codes.
