Case IH 19795 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): SCR Inducement: Level 3 (creep mode), triggered by DEF/AdBlue Consumption fault.

Issue description

The system has detected that the volume of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) being consumed is significantly lower than the expected calculated value for the current engine load and NOx reduction requirements. Because the emissions system cannot operate correctly without the proper amount of DEF, the system triggers a Level 3 Inducement (creep mode) which severely restricts engine torque and limits vehicle speed.

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the DEF tank is full and use a DEF refractometer to ensure the fluid concentration is at the required 32.5%. Contaminated or diluted DEF can cause consumption calculation errors.

  2. Inspect all DEF lines running from the tank to the supply pump, and from the pump to the doser injector. Look for white, crystalline buildup which indicates a leak.

  3. Inspect the DEF filter. A clogged DEF filter will restrict fluid flow, causing a low consumption fault.

  4. Remove the DEF doser injector from the exhaust pipe and inspect the nozzle for severe DEF crystallization or soot blockage.

  5. Using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), run a DEF dosing quantity test to verify if the supply pump can build adequate pressure and if the injector spray pattern/volume meets OEM specifications.

Repair steps

  1. Clean or Replace the DEF Doser Injector

    If the diagnostic test reveals a poor spray pattern or the injector is physically caked in crystallized DEF, attempt to clean the nozzle with warm water. If the blockage is internal or the solenoid has failed, replace the DEF doser injector.

  2. Service the DEF Supply Pump

    If the injector is clear but fluid is not reaching the exhaust, replace the main DEF filter located inside the supply pump module.

  3. Replace the DEF Supply Module

    If replacing the filter does not restore DEF pressure, the internal pump mechanism has likely failed. Replace the entire DEF Supply/Dosing Module.

  4. Reprogramming

    If the DEF Supply Module is replaced, the new module must be programmed/calibrated to the vehicle's ECU using the CNH EST software.

  5. Reset the Inducement

    Once the mechanical repairs are complete, use the CNH EST to clear the fault codes and perform an SCR system reset to lift the Level 3 Inducement (creep mode) and restore full engine power.
