Case IH 19798 – Engine Control Module (ECM): SCR Inducement: Level 3 (creep mode), triggered by DEF/AdBlue Quality fault
Issue description
The emissions system has detected poor-quality Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) or a failure in the DEF quality sensor. Multiple detections force the machine into a Level 3 inducement (creep mode), which is a severe engine torque and speed derate designed to force compliance with emissions regulations.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- Tier 4b
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines (7240, 8240, 9240)
- Farmall (40-45-50 Cab/CVT, 115U)
- T7 Series (Tier 4B)
- Magnum (235-340 Series 4)
- Puma
- Optum
- Steiger
Check the cause
Test the DEF fluid concentration using a refractometer (must be exactly 32.5% +/- 1.5%)
Inspect the DEF tank for contamination, dirt, debris, or heavy crystallization
Check for accompanying fault codes (such as 19799, 19817, or NOx sensor faults) to isolate fluid vs. sensor issues
Inspect the DEF tank header and quality sensor for signs of internal circuit board corrosion or electrical shorting caused by ammonia gas
Repair steps
Drain and Flush
If the DEF is degraded, contaminated, or crystallized, completely drain the DEF tank and flush the system.
Replace Filters
Replace the DEF suction filter and main inline DEF filter to ensure no crystallized urea or debris reaches the dosing injector.
Refill
Refill the tank with fresh, known-good ISO 22241 certified DEF.
Replace the Sensor/Header
If the fluid was perfectly fine but the sensor drifted or failed due to circuit board corrosion, replace the DEF Quality Sensor or the entire DEF Tank Header Unit. (Note: Check with a dealer to see if a software flash is available for your specific model to eliminate the requirement for the DEF quality sensor before replacing the header).
Reset the Inducement Lock
Connect a dealer diagnostic service tool (such as Case IH EST or Jaltest) and navigate to the 'Engine Restart Counter Reset' screen to reset the system, as fixing the hardware alone will not clear the creep mode.
Emergency Restart
If the machine is stuck in the field, use the 'Emergency Re-start' function to provide 30 seconds of operation without power loss to move the machine to a safe location.
