19816

Case IH 19816 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU) or Dosing Control Unit (DCU): Thermal Management is active

Issue description

Fault code 19816 is an informational status code indicating that the engine's aftertreatment thermal management system is currently active to facilitate the regeneration of the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system or the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Case IH tractors and loaders
  • Case Construction equipment
  • Machines with FPT Tier 4 Final diesel engines
  • Machines with FPT Stage V diesel engines
  • Machines with FPT F5HFL463D engine

Check the cause

  1. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and check for any concurrent active fault codes related to DEF/AdBlue dosing (e.g., 19817), exhaust temperature sensors (e.g., 19810, 19811, 19812), or intake manifold temperatures.

  2. Monitor the Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) sensors upstream and downstream of the oxidation catalyst to verify they are reading plausible temperature increases.

  3. Check the DEF/AdBlue fluid level and ensure there are no active inducement warnings (e.g., low level or poor quality).

  4. Verify that the intake throttle and variable exhaust flap are not mechanically binding, as the system relies on these airpath components to build heat.

Repair steps

  1. Do Not Interrupt

If code 19816 is the only active code, no physical repair is required. Operate the machine under a normal or heavy working load to allow the engine to generate natural heat, which helps the thermal management cycle complete faster.

  2. Allow Cycle Completion

Do not shut off the engine while the thermal management/regeneration cycle is active, as this will interrupt the process and cause the code to return upon the next startup.

  3. Address Concurrent Faults

If the code remains stuck active indefinitely or the machine enters a derate/inducement mode, diagnose and repair any accompanying fault codes (such as replacing a faulty EGT sensor or unblocking the DEF dosing valve).

  4. Forced Regeneration

If the system is struggling to clear the thermal management state due to prolonged light loading or idling, use the EST to initiate a manual/forced stationary DPF regeneration.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor

Generic part; inspect for failure if codes 19810-19815 are present

  • DEF/AdBlue Dosing Valve

Generic part; inspect for blockage if code 19817 is present

  • Variable Exhaust Flap / Intake Throttle Valve

Generic part; inspect if the engine fails to build exhaust heat
