19820

Case IH 19820 – Engine Control Module (ECM / Engine ECU): The external clock via CAN is failure (TimeDate)

Issue description

The control module expects to receive a continuous time and date broadcast over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus from an external clock source (typically the instrument cluster or a central cab controller), but this signal is missing, corrupted, or timing out.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Case Construction N Series Backhoe Loaders
  • 580N
  • 580SN
  • 590SN

Check the cause

  1. Verify the instrument cluster or cab display (the primary Time/Date source) is powering up correctly and that the time/date can be manually set and holds its memory

  2. Check battery and system voltage, as low or spiking voltage can disable CAN broadcasts

  3. Scan for broader CAN faults (such as 19365–19371) to determine if there is a physical CAN bus failure rather than just an isolated clock issue

  4. Inspect the CAN bus harness and connectors between the cab controller/instrument cluster and the Engine ECU for corrosion, backed-out pins, or chafing

Repair steps

  1. Power Cycle & Reset

Disconnect the battery for 10-15 minutes to perform a hard reset of the modules on the CAN bus. Reconnect and turn the key to the ON position.

  2. Set the Time/Date

Navigate through the instrument cluster or display monitor menus and manually reset the time and date.

  3. Harness Testing

If the code persists, use a multimeter to check the CAN High and CAN Low lines between the instrument cluster and the Engine ECU. You should see approximately 60 ohms of resistance across the CAN network with the batteries disconnected.

  4. Repair Wiring

If resistance is out of spec or a wire is open/shorted, repair the damaged section of the CAN harness or replace the connector pins.

  5. Software Update / Module Replacement

If the wiring is perfectly intact and the cluster is otherwise functioning but failing to broadcast the TimeDate CAN frame, the instrument cluster/cab controller may require a firmware re-flash via the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST). If it cannot be re-flashed, the broadcasting module must be replaced.

  6. Clear Codes

Use the diagnostic tool to clear code 19820 and run the machine to verify the code does not return.
