Case IH 19821 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): The time received via CAN (TimeDate) is lower than ECU absolute time
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) maintains an internal absolute clock. If the time broadcasted over the CAN bus from the main controller is older (lower) than the time already stored in the ECM's internal memory, it triggers this fault. This is almost always a configuration mismatch caused by a disconnected or dead main battery, a replaced or reset display, or a temporary loss of CAN bus communication.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- Tier 4b
- Magnum
- Steiger
- Puma
- Maxxum
- Axial-Flow Combines (5130, 6140, 7240)
- N-Series Loaders
- N-Series Backhoes
Check the cause
Check the time and date currently set on the tractor's main display (e.g., AFS Pro 700 or instrument cluster) to verify if it has reverted to a past date
Test the main vehicle battery voltage and inspect the battery terminals (a weak battery dropping voltage during cranking can cause controllers to lose memory)
Verify CAN communication by ensuring there are no other active CAN bus communication fault codes preventing the ECM from receiving the updated time
Repair steps
Turn the ignition key to the ON position
Do not start the engine.
Navigate to the settings menu
Access the settings menu on the main display (AFS Pro 700 monitor or the instrument cluster).
Update the time and date
Manually update the time and date to the current, correct local time.
Turn the ignition key OFF
Turn the key off to begin the power down sequence.
Wait for the ECM to power down completely
You must wait until the main power relay clicks off (usually takes 30 to 60 seconds) to ensure the new time is written to the modules.
Verify fault code status
Turn the key back ON and check the fault code list. Code 19821 should now have moved from Active to Inactive.
Clear inactive fault codes
Clear the inactive fault codes using the display monitor or the Electronic Service Tool (EST).
Parts you might need
(3)Main Vehicle Battery (12V Heavy Duty)
4780901212-Volt, 840 CCA, 100 Ah. Fitment varies heavily by machine model; check specific machine parts catalog. Only required if the machine continuously loses its time/date settings.
AFS Pro 700 Color Monitor / IntelliView IV Display
48094361Manufacturer: CNH Industrial / Trimble. Only required if the display itself has failed and will not retain memory/settings. Displays can often be sent to specialized repair shops to have internal batteries or screens replaced.
