Case IH 19829 – VCM (Vehicle Control Module) / Engine ECU: Upper SRC limit for the current through the turbo charger actuator
Issue description
This code indicates that the electrical current flowing through the turbocharger's electronic actuator circuit has exceeded the maximum allowable limit (Upper SRC limit). This is typically caused by an internal short circuit within the actuator motor itself, a short-to-power/ground in the wiring harness, or a mechanical binding in the turbocharger wastegate/VGT linkage that is forcing the actuator motor to overwork and draw excessive amperage.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness connecting the VCM to the turbocharger actuator. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or areas where the harness may be rubbing against hot engine components.
Connector Check: Disconnect the turbocharger actuator. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or heat damage (melting) caused by high current draw.
Linkage Test: With the actuator disconnected, manually move the turbocharger linkage. It should move freely without binding.
Electrical Testing: Use a multimeter to check the wiring harness for a short to ground or short to power between the actuator connector and the VCM pins.
Electrical Testing: Measure the internal resistance of the turbocharger actuator and compare it to OEM specifications. A reading of near-zero ohms indicates an internal short.
Check for Related Codes: Look for accompanying codes such as 19830 (Lower SRC limit) or 19835-19838 (Errors on the Turbocharger PWM output powerstage) which further isolate the issue to the PWM circuit.
Repair steps
Safety First
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Turbocharger
Locate the turbocharger assembly on the exhaust manifold of the FPT 3.4L engine.
Harness Repair (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic phase revealed a shorted wire, repair the damaged section of the harness using heat-shrink butt connectors, or replace the turbo actuator pigtail/harness.
Remove the Actuator
If the actuator is internally shorted, disconnect its electrical connector. Remove the retaining clips or bolts securing the actuator linkage to the turbocharger. Remove the mounting bolts holding the actuator to the turbo bracket.
Install the New Actuator
Mount the replacement actuator to the bracket. Reattach the linkage arm, ensuring it is properly indexed and secured with the retaining clip.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back into the actuator. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
Clear Codes and Calibrate
Turn the ignition on. Use a diagnostic scan tool (such as the Case EST tool) to clear fault code 19829. Some electronic actuators require a relearn/calibration procedure via the scan tool so the VCM can learn the new actuator's end-stops.
Test Run
Start the engine and operate the machine under load to verify the turbocharger functions correctly and the code does not return.
