Case IH 19831 (DTC 1938) – ECU or VCM: Turbo over speed failure under high ambient pressure conditions.

Issue description

The turbocharger's rotational speed has exceeded the maximum safe threshold programmed into the engine management system while operating in high ambient (barometric) pressure environments. This over-speeding condition indicates a potential sensor failure, intake leak, or stuck VGT actuator, and can lead to catastrophic failure of the turbocharger's bearings and compressor wheel if left unaddressed.

Check the cause

  1. Verify ambient pressure sensor reading using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to rule out a skewed sensor falsely reporting high pressure.

  2. Check for intake or boost leaks in the charge-air cooler (CAC) piping or boots, which can cause the turbo to over-speed to compensate for lost pressure.

  3. Inspect the turbo speed sensor wiring harness and connector for chafing, corrosion, or open/short circuits.

  4. Test the VGT actuator or wastegate to ensure it is not stuck closed, forcing the turbo to over-speed under load.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

    Hook up the Case IH EST and monitor live data for Turbocharger Speed and Ambient Air Pressure.

  2. Inspect Wiring

    Visually and electrically test the harness between the Engine ECU and the turbo speed sensor. Repair any damaged pins or wires.

  3. Address Sensor Failures

    If the ambient pressure sensor is reading out of specification compared to local atmospheric pressure, replace the ambient pressure sensor. If the turbo speed sensor is providing erratic or no data while the turbo is spinning, replace the turbo speed sensor.

  4. Perform Leak Down Test

    Pressurize the intake system to check for charge-air leaks. Tighten clamps or replace torn silicone boots as necessary.

  5. Inspect Turbocharger

    Remove the intake piping and inspect the turbocharger compressor wheel for play, scoring, or foreign object damage. Spin the wheel by hand to check for bearing drag.

  6. Replace Turbocharger

    If the VGT mechanism is seized, the bearings are failing, or the compressor wheel is damaged from the over-speed event, replace the entire turbocharger assembly.

  7. Clear Codes and Test

    Clear the DTC 1938 / 19831 from the ECU. Run the machine under a heavy load to verify that the turbo speed remains within the safe operating range.
