Case IH 19831 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Turbo over speed failure under high ambient pressure conditions
Issue description
The turbocharger is spinning faster than its maximum safe rotational limit (overspeed) while the machine is operating in high ambient pressure (or high altitude) conditions. This typically happens when the turbocharger is overworking to compensate for a loss of boost pressure, or when the engine control system is receiving incorrect data and commanding too much turbo speed.

Check the cause
Check for boost leaks (most common cause): Inspect all charge air cooler (intercooler) hoses, clamps, and intake gaskets for pressure escaping before reaching the engine.
Inspect the VGT / Wastegate: Check the Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) actuator or wastegate for sticking vanes due to carbon/soot buildup or electronic actuator failure.
Check for exhaust restrictions: Inspect for a plugged Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) or muffler creating excessive exhaust backpressure.
Verify sensor data: Use a diagnostic tool to check live data for the ambient air pressure sensor (barometric sensor), boost pressure sensor, and turbo speed sensor for incorrect readings.
Inspect the turbocharger: Remove intake piping and inspect the compressor wheel for bent/distorted blades, oil residue, or excessive shaft play indicating mechanical bearing failure.
Repair steps
Resolve Leaks & Restrictions
If a split hose, loose clamp, or cracked intercooler is found during the diagnostic phase, replace the damaged component and tighten all clamps to spec.
Clean or Replace the Actuator
If the VGT actuator is sticking due to soot, clean the mechanism. If the actuator has failed mechanically or electronically, replace the VGT actuator and recalibrate it using the OEM diagnostic software.
Replace the Turbocharger (If Damaged)
Drain the engine oil and remove the turbocharger oil supply and drain lines. Disconnect the exhaust downpipe and intake piping. Unbolt the turbocharger from the exhaust manifold. Install the new turbocharger using new mounting gaskets and O-rings. Crucial: Prime the new turbocharger by pouring clean engine oil into the oil feed port and spinning the compressor wheel by hand before starting the engine.
Clear Codes and Test
Clear DTC 19831 from the ECU. Run the machine under load to verify that requested boost matches actual boost and that the turbo speed remains within safe parameters.
