Case IH 19836 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / EDC): ECU Power stages: Over temperature error on the Turbocharger PWM output power stage.
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an excessive current draw on the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal circuit that controls the turbocharger wastegate actuator. This high current draw causes the ECU's internal H-bridge (the power stage driver) to overheat. It is typically caused by a short circuit in the wiring harness, an internal short within the turbocharger actuator solenoid, or a failed ECU.

Check the cause
Visual Wiring Inspection: Trace the wiring harness from the turbocharger wastegate actuator back to the ECU. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or areas where the harness may be rubbing against the engine block or exhaust components, causing a short to ground.
Connector Check: Disconnect the turbocharger actuator and the ECU. Inspect the pins for corrosion, water intrusion, or bent terminals.
Actuator Resistance Test: Measure the internal resistance of the turbocharger actuator solenoid using a multimeter. Compare the reading against OEM specifications. A reading of near-zero ohms indicates an internal short circuit within the actuator.
Harness Continuity/Short Test: With both ends disconnected, test the PWM signal wire for continuity to ground or continuity to the power supply wire.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Always disconnect the negative battery cable before servicing ECU wiring or engine sensors.
Repair Wiring
If a short is found in the harness during diagnostics, repair the damaged section using heat-shrink butt connectors or replace the affected harness pigtail.
Replace the Actuator/Turbocharger
If the actuator failed the resistance test (internal short), it must be replaced. Note: On many FPT 3.4L engines, the OEM does not service the electronic wastegate actuator separately from the turbocharger; the entire turbocharger assembly must be replaced.
ECU Evaluation
Reconnect all components, restore battery power, and clear the fault codes using an electronic service tool (EST). If the 19836 code immediately returns despite verified good wiring and a new actuator, the ECU's internal power stage has been permanently burned out by the previous short circuit, and the ECU must be replaced and reprogrammed.
