Case IH 19840 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU: Turbo charger actuator position sensor voltage is lower than expected

Issue description

The signal voltage from the VGT actuator's internal position sensor has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold (typically < 0.5V). This indicates an electrical fault (open circuit, short to ground, loss of 5V reference, internal failure) or mechanical seizing of turbo vanes causing actuator motor failure.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the VGT actuator wiring harness and connector for corrosion, backed-out pins, or chafing against the engine block.

  2. Use a multimeter to verify the 5V reference and ground circuits at the actuator connector. Check the signal wire for continuity to the ECM and ensure it is not shorted to ground.

  3. Remove the actuator from the turbocharger and manually actuate the sector gear/vanes by hand. If the vanes are seized or binding due to soot/carbon buildup, the turbocharger itself is the root cause.

  4. Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor the actuator position sensor voltage live data while commanding a sweep test.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the machine's master battery disconnect switch.

    Ensure the machine's electrical system is powered down before beginning work.

  2. Disconnect the electrical harness from the VGT actuator.

    Carefully unplug the connector from the actuator.

  3. Drain the engine coolant and disconnect the coolant lines from the actuator housing.

    Perform this step only if the actuator is water-cooled.

  4. Remove the mounting bolts securing the actuator to the turbocharger housing.

    Unbolt the actuator from the turbocharger.

  5. Remove the actuator and clean the mounting surface on the turbocharger.

    Ensure the mounting surface is free of debris before installing the new part.

  6. Install the new actuator.

    Ensure the gear teeth mesh correctly with the turbocharger's sector gear.

  7. Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

    Secure the actuator to the turbocharger housing.

  8. Reconnect the coolant lines (if applicable) and the electrical harness.

    Restore fluid and electrical connections to the actuator.

  9. Refill the engine coolant.

    Replenish the coolant drained in step 3.

  10. Connect the CNH EST diagnostic tool and perform the VGT Actuator Calibration procedure.

    Critical Step: The ECM must learn the new actuator's physical end stops (fully open and fully closed). Without calibration, the ECM cannot properly control boost, leading to immediate performance problems and recurring codes.
