Case IH 19841 – Engine Control Module (ECM): CAN timeout error for TSC1 for ABS/ASR torque and/or speed request to ECM

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has lost communication or timed out while waiting for the Torque/Speed Control 1 (TSC1) message from the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) or Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) module over the CAN bus network.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying codes (e.g., 3096 CAN A bus off, 3097 CAN B bus off, or 3652 CAN node disconnected) which indicate a broader network failure rather than an isolated ABS/ECM issue.

  2. Inspect harness connections at the ABS/ASR control module and the Engine ECM for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

  3. Verify power and ground to ensure the ABS/ASR module is receiving proper operating voltage and has a clean ground.

  4. Test CAN bus integrity by measuring the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins (should read approximately 60 ohms).

  5. Check continuity for open circuits or shorts to ground/battery voltage on the CAN wiring specifically between the ABS module and the ECM.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Clean and Reseat Connectors

    Disconnect the wiring harnesses at both the ABS/ASR module and the Engine ECM. Spray the terminals with a high-quality electrical contact cleaner. Reconnect them, ensuring the locking tabs click into place.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the continuity test revealed a broken wire or short in the CAN bus harness, splice and repair the damaged section using OEM-approved heat-shrink connectors, or replace the affected harness section.

  4. Replace Terminating Resistors

    If the CAN resistance is out of spec (e.g., 120 ohms instead of 60), locate and replace the failed CAN terminating resistor.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect the battery. Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault codes. Start the machine and test drive it to see if the ABS/ASR torque request timeout returns.

  6. Module Replacement

    If the wiring is 100% intact, the CAN resistance is correct, and the code immediately returns, the fault lies internally within the ABS/ASR Control Module (failing to send) or the ECM (failing to receive). Replace the faulty module and flash it with the latest CNH software.
