Case IH 19842 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): CAN timeout error for TSC1 of DriveLine Retarder torque and/or speed request to ECU

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has lost communication with the Driveline Retarder control module. The ECU expects to receive a continuous TSC1 (Torque/Speed Control 1) message over the J1939 CAN bus network from the retarder to manage engine torque and speed. When this message is not received within the programmed time limit, the ECU logs this fault to prevent vehicle instability.

Check the cause

  1. Perform a network scan using a diagnostic tool to check if other modules are also reporting CAN timeout errors.

  2. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the Driveline Retarder, the VCM, and the Engine ECU for disconnected cables, broken wires, or short circuits.

  3. Perform a CAN resistance test across CAN High and CAN Low at the retarder connector with the battery disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates a broken wire or missing terminating resistor, 0 ohms indicates a short).

  4. Verify that the Driveline Retarder control module is receiving proper operating voltage and has a clean ground connection.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Clean and Reseat Connectors

    Locate the Driveline Retarder module and the Engine ECU. Disconnect the harness connectors, inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins. Clean with contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease before reconnecting.

  3. Repair CAN Harness

    If the diagnostic resistance test revealed a short or open circuit, trace the CAN lines (CAN High / CAN Low) along the chassis. Repair any chafed or broken wires using OEM-approved splicing methods and heat-shrink tubing.

  4. Replace Terminating Resistor

    If the CAN network resistance is incorrect and wiring is intact, locate and replace the faulty CAN terminating resistor.

  5. Replace the Retarder Module

    If the wiring, power, and grounds are all verified as good, but the module still fails to broadcast the TSC1 message, the Driveline Retarder Control Module has failed internally and must be replaced.

  6. Clear and Retest

    Reconnect the battery, connect the diagnostic tool, clear the inactive 19842 fault code, and perform a test drive to ensure the driveline retarder engages properly and the code does not return.
