Case IH 19843 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ECM): CAN timeout error for TSC1 of GearBox/Vehicle management torque and/or speed request to ECU

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU/ECM) has lost communication with the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM) over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Specifically, the engine is expecting a standard SAE J1939 TSC1 (Torque/Speed Control 1) message from the gearbox/vehicle management system to coordinate engine RPM and torque with transmission shifting, but the message is not arriving within the expected timeframe.

Check the cause

  1. Check battery voltage during cranking (a drop below 9-10 volts can cause modules to temporarily shut down and log CAN timeout errors)

  2. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the ECU and the Transmission/Vehicle Control Module for chafing, pinched wires, or damaged conduit

  3. Check the main harness connectors at both the ECU and TCU for moisture ingress, corrosion, or pushed-back pins

  4. Measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port with the battery disconnected (should be approximately 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates an open circuit or missing terminating resistor)

  5. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for accompanying codes indicating other modules are offline

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent short circuits during testing.

  2. Clean and Reseat Connectors

    Disconnect the harness at the ECU and the Gearbox/Vehicle Management module. Spray the pins with electrical contact cleaner, ensure no pins are bent, and firmly reseat the connectors.

  3. Repair Harness

    If the resistance test failed, trace the CAN High (usually yellow) and CAN Low (usually green) wires between the transmission and engine modules. Repair any broken wires using OEM-approved CAN bus wiring repair connectors.

  4. Check Terminating Resistors

    Ensure the CAN terminators at the far ends of the bus are intact and functioning.

  5. Software Update

    If the wiring is perfectly intact, connect the Case IH EST (Electronic Service Tool). Check if the TECU (Tractor ECU) or Engine ECU requires a software update to resolve communication latency bugs.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect the battery, use the EST to clear the pending/stored 19843 code, and test-drive the machine under load to verify the transmission and engine are communicating properly.
