Case IH 19850 – Engine Control Module (ECM): CAN timeout error for TSC1 of AD management torque and/or speed request to ECU
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) has lost communication over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus with the Advanced Drivetrain (AD) management controller. The ECM is expecting a standard J1939 CAN bus message called TSC1 (Torque/Speed Control 1), which the AD management system uses to request specific engine speeds or torque limits. Because the message is not arriving within the expected timeframe, the ECM logs a timeout error.

Check the cause
Check for accompanying CAN timeout codes (e.g., 19843 for Gearbox/Vehicle management, 19841 for ABS/ASR) to determine if the entire CAN bus network is compromised.
Verify the AD management controller / Vehicle Control Module (VCM) for proper power and ground. A blown fuse or bad ground will prevent it from broadcasting the TSC1 message.
With the machine off and batteries disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN bus pins. A healthy network should read 60 ohms. 120 ohms indicates a missing/faulty terminating resistor or open circuit. Infinite resistance (open) indicates a severed wire or disconnected connector.
Visually inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the AD management controller/VCM for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Inspect and Clean Connectors
Locate the harness connectors at the Engine ECU and the AD management controller. Disconnect them and inspect for pushed-back pins, moisture, or corrosion. Clean the pins with contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.
Repair Wiring / Replace Resistor
If the CAN resistance test yielded 120 ohms, locate the faulty CAN terminating resistor or the break in the harness. Replace the damaged wire section or plug in a new terminating resistor.
Reconnect and Clear Codes
Reconnect all modules and the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use a diagnostic tool (like the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the inactive fault codes.
Module Replacement (If Necessary)
If the wiring and resistors are perfectly intact, but the AD management controller refuses to communicate on the CAN bus, the controller itself has failed internally and must be replaced and reprogrammed by a dealer.
