Case IH 19852 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): CAN timeout error for TSC1 for ABS/ASR (Torque request to Retarder - ECM makes retarder function)

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has lost communication or timed out while waiting to receive the TSC1 (Torque/Speed Control 1) message from the ABS/ASR (Anti-lock Braking System / Anti-Slip Regulation) module regarding a torque request to the driveline retarder.

   Check CAN Bus Communication: Verify if the ABS/ASR module is communicating on the network using a diagnostic tool plugged into the X030 (CAN BUS 1) or X028 (EHR CAN) diagnostic ports.

   Inspect Wiring Harnesses: Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness connecting the ABS module to the ECM for physical damage, chafing, or corrosion.

   Check for Accompanying Codes: Look for other CAN bus off errors (such as 3096 CAN A bus off, or 3097 CAN B bus off) or ABS module failure codes that might indicate a broader network failure rather than a single module timeout.

   Locate modules

   Locate the ABS/EBM module and the ECM on the machine.

   Disconnect connectors

   Disconnect the main harness connectors at both the ABS module and the ECM.

   Perform continuity test

   Using a multimeter, perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the ABS module and the ECM to isolate any open circuits.

   Test for shorts

   Test the CAN wires for a short to ground or short to power.

   Repair or replace harness

   If a wiring fault is found, repair the damaged section of the harness or replace the ABS system harness.

   Replace ABS module

   If the wiring tests good, the fault may lie internally within the ABS module failing to broadcast the TSC1 message, requiring module replacement.

   Reconnect and test

   Reconnect all components, clear the fault codes via the diagnostic port, and test-drive the machine to ensure the retarder torque request functions without triggering a timeout.
