Case IH 19853 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): CAN timeout error for TSC1 of Driveline Retarder (Torque request to Retarder - ECM makes retarder function)

A Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication failure where the Engine Control Module (ECM) does not receive the required TSC1 (Torque Speed Control 1) message from the Driveline Retarder within the programmed time threshold, causing the retarder function to be disabled or default to a safe mode.

   Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for other CAN timeout codes (e.g., 19842, 19852, 19854) to rule out a broader CAN bus failure.

   Visually inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the Driveline Retarder controller and the ECM for chafed wires, pinched cables, or broken connections.

   Disconnect the CAN connectors at the retarder module and the ECM to inspect for pushed-back pins, corrosion, or moisture intrusion.

   With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins (should read approximately 60 ohms).

   Ensure the Driveline Retarder control module is receiving proper operating voltage and has a clean ground connection.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

   If the diagnostic checks revealed an open circuit, short circuit, or damaged CAN cable, repair the affected section of the wiring harness or replace the harness entirely.

   Clean Connectors

   Apply a high-quality electrical contact cleaner to the pins of the ECM and Retarder module connectors. Apply dielectric grease to the connector seals to prevent future moisture ingress.

   Replace Module (If Wiring is Good)

   If the CAN wiring, terminating resistors, and power/ground supplies all test perfectly, the internal CAN transceiver in the Driveline Retarder module has likely failed. Replace the Driveline Retarder control module.

   Reassemble and Clear Codes

   Reconnect all harnesses and the battery. Connect the Case IH EST, clear the inactive 19853 fault code, and perform a key cycle.

   Operational Test

   Test drive the machine under load and engage the driveline retarder to verify that the ECM successfully makes the retarder function and the code does not return.
