Case IH 19862 (F-4355-31) - ECU – Heater Control Unit (HCU): Power stage error in HCU for DEF/AdBlue Back flow line Heater
Issue description
The internal driver circuit (power stage) inside the Heater Control Unit (HCU) that supplies voltage to the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) backflow line heater has detected a general fault. This is typically caused by an over-temperature condition within the module, a short circuit to ground, or a short circuit to the battery/high source in the heater circuit.
Applies to these machines
9 machines- VESTRUM CVX
- Puma
- Magnum
- Optum
- Steiger
- Vestrum
- Farmall series
- N-Series Backhoe Loaders
- 580SN
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the HCU to the DEF backflow line heater for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinched sections.
Disconnect the connectors at the HCU and the DEF backflow line heater to check for water intrusion, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Using a multimeter, measure the resistance of the DEF backflow line heater element to check for a dead short or an open circuit.
Check the heater control circuit wiring for continuity to ground and continuity to power to rule out harness shorts.
Verify that the HCU is receiving proper voltage at Terminal 30 (Supply) and has a clean ground at Terminal 31.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Address Wiring Issues
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring harness, repair the damaged wires using proper weather-sealed splices, or replace the affected DEF harness breakout section.
Replace the Heater (If Faulty)
If the DEF backflow line heater tested as shorted, remove the defective heated line assembly and install a new OEM heated line.
Replace the HCU (If Faulty)
If the wiring and the heater element both test perfectly fine, the short circuit or over-temperature event has likely permanently burned out the internal power stage driver inside the HCU. Locate the HCU, disconnect its multi-pin connectors, unbolt it from its mounting bracket, and install a new unit.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and use a diagnostic service tool (like the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the inactive fault codes.
System Validation
Run the engine and command a DEF system heater test via the diagnostic tool to ensure the HCU successfully powers the backflow line heater without logging code 19862 again.
