Case IH 19866 – DCU (Dosing Control Unit) or HCU (Heater Control Unit): Short Circuit to Ground of DEF/AdBlue Backflow Line Heater Actuator powerstage
Issue description
The control module has detected a short circuit to ground on the electrical circuit (power stage) that supplies voltage to the heating element inside the DEF backflow line. This is usually caused by chafed wiring touching the machine's chassis or an internal short within the heated hose itself.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness from the DCU/HCU to the DEF backflow line heater for pinched wires, melted insulation, or areas where the harness may have rubbed against the frame.
Perform a component resistance test by disconnecting the electrical connector at the DEF backflow line and checking the resistance of the heater element inside the line. Continuity to ground or zero resistance indicates the heating element has failed.
Perform a harness continuity test with the line disconnected and the key ON to check the harness side for a short to ground. If the short is still present, the issue is in the machine's wiring harness.
Inspect the DCU/HCU connectors for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins, which can cause internal bridging or shorts.
Repair steps
Depressurize and Power Down
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and wait for the DEF system to complete its purge cycle (you will hear the pump returning fluid to the tank). Disconnect the battery.
Locate the Backflow Line
Identify the DEF backflow line, which routes from the DEF dosing module back to the DEF tank.
Disconnect Electricals
Unplug the electrical connector for the backflow line heater.
Disconnect Fluid Fittings
Disconnect the fluid line at both ends. These are typically secured using 7.89 mm SAE J2044 quick-connect fittings. Have a clean catch pan ready for any residual DEF fluid.
Remove and Route
Carefully unclip the faulty line from its routing brackets. Route the new OEM heated DEF backflow line in its place. Ensure the new line is secured away from sharp edges or high-heat sources to prevent future chafing.
Reconnect
Snap the quick-connect fluid fittings into place until they click. Reconnect the heater's electrical connector.
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect the battery. Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the 19866 fault code. Run the engine and perform a DEF system heater test to verify the power stage is operating correctly without shorting.
