Case IH 19867 – HCU: PRC high for Voltage at DEF/AdBlue Backflow Line Heater (via HCU)
Issue description
Voltage detected on the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) backflow line heater circuit is higher than the expected physical range. This typically points to an open circuit, a short to a high-voltage source (such as battery voltage), or a completely failed/burnt-out internal heating element within the DEF line.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the DEF backflow line wiring harness and connectors for rubbed-through wires, corrosion, or bent pins
Perform a resistance (Ohms) test on the DEF backflow line heater pins (should read less than 10 ohms, typically 4.5 to 5 ohms)
Test the heater line pins for continuity to a good chassis ground (there should be no continuity/infinite resistance; continuity indicates an internal short)
Turn the ignition ON and perform a harness voltage test at the connector to verify if the circuit is open or out of specification
Check the DEF line heater fuses and the DEF Backflow Line Heater Relay for blown fuses or stuck relays
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Isolate the Fault
Based on the resistance test, determine if the fault is in the DEF line itself (open/high resistance) or the machine's wiring harness (chafed wires shorting to battery).
Disconnect Fluid Lines
If the line heater tests bad, depressurize the system if necessary, and disconnect the fluid fittings of the backflow line at the DEF dosing unit and the DEF tank.
Remove the Line
Unclip the DEF backflow line from its routing brackets, being careful to note the exact routing path.
Install the New Line
Route the new DEF backflow line exactly as the old one was routed. Do not bend or kink the line tightly, as this can damage the internal heating wires.
Reconnect
Snap the fluid fittings into place and plug in the electrical connector.
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect the battery. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the 19867 fault code. Run an Output Component Test or a DEF system heater test via the diagnostic tool to verify the HCU is properly commanding the heater without logging a voltage error.
