Case IH 19872 – HCU: Power stage error in HCU for DEF/AdBlue Supply Module Heater

The system has detected an electrical fault in the power stage (the internal driver or output circuit) that supplies voltage to the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) supply module heater. This typically points to an open circuit, a short to ground, a short to battery voltage, or an internal failure within the control module's output driver.

   Check for related codes (such as 19873, 19874, 19875, or 19876) that might narrow down the electrical issue

   Visually inspect the wiring harness between the HCU/DCU and the DEF supply module for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched lines

   Disconnect the DEF supply module heater connector and the HCU connector to inspect pins for corrosion, moisture intrusion (DEF fluid wicking), or loose terminals

   Using a multimeter, measure the resistance (Ohms) across the heater pins on the DEF supply module to check for an open or shorted heating element

   Test the power and ground wires from the HCU to the heater for continuity, and check for a short to ground or a short to battery voltage

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine, remove the key, and turn off the battery disconnect switch to prevent electrical arcing or module damage.

   Access the Components

   Locate the DEF supply module (usually mounted near the DEF tank or along the lower frame) and the HCU/DCU.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or corroded connector, splice in a new section of wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink connectors, or replace the damaged connector pigtail.

   Replace the DEF Supply Module

   If the internal heater of the supply module failed the resistance test, the module must be replaced. Disconnect the DEF fluid lines (clean any spillage immediately with warm water), disconnect the electrical harness, unbolt the supply module from its mounting bracket, install the new unit, and reconnect the fluid lines and electrical harness.

   Replace the HCU

   If the wiring and the heater element both test perfectly, the power stage driver inside the HCU has likely failed. Replace the HCU.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Turn the battery disconnect back on. Connect the Case IH EASy diagnostic tool (or equivalent scanner) to clear the fault codes. Run the engine and perform a DEF system heater test via the diagnostic tool to verify the repair.
