Case IH 19879 – Heater Control Unit (HCU): Heater control unit reports missing voltage at Terminal 30

The Heater Control Unit (HCU) is not receiving its main battery power (Terminal 30). Without this voltage, the DEF heating system cannot function, which can lead to emissions derates in cold weather.

   Verify the machine's base battery voltage is sufficient and battery terminals are clean and tight.

   Locate the electrical panel and check the specific fuse(s) supplying Terminal 30 power to the Heater Control Unit.

   Test the AdBlue line heater HCU relay (often a 5-pin relay) to ensure it is switching power correctly.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the battery/fuse box and the HCU for breaks, chafing, corrosion, or loose connector pins.

   Disconnect the HCU and use a multimeter to test for voltage directly at the Terminal 30 pin on the HCU connector.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the negative battery cable to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

   Replace Blown Fuses

   If the Terminal 30 fuse is blown, replace it. (Note: If it blows again immediately upon reconnecting power, there is a short to ground in the wiring that must be traced).

   Repair Wiring

   Repair or replace any damaged wiring or corroded pins found in the Terminal 30 circuit supplying the HCU.

   Replace Relay

   If the AdBlue line heater relay fails bench testing, replace it with a new OEM relay.

   Replace HCU

   If the wiring, fuses, and relays are all verified good (meaning 12V/24V is definitely reaching the HCU connector), but the HCU still reports an internal missing voltage error, the Heater Control Unit itself has failed internally and must be replaced.

   Reassemble and Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery, use a diagnostic tool (like the CNH EST) to clear the fault codes, and run the engine to verify the DEF system initializes without throwing the 19879 code.
