Case IH 19880 (F-3360-31) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Heater control unit detected error with Non Volatile Memory (NVM) - internal system failure.
Issue description
The Heater Control Unit (HCU) is a critical component of the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) / Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) system, responsible for heating the DEF lines and tank to prevent the fluid from freezing. An NVM (Non-Volatile Memory) error indicates that the module's internal memory (EEPROM/Flash)—which stores its firmware and operational data—has become corrupted or suffered a physical hardware failure.
Applies to these machines
10 machines- VESTRUM CVX
- N-Series Loader Backhoes (580N, 590N)
- Magnum
- Steiger
- Puma
- Maxxum
- Farmall
- Axial-Flow Combines (7240, 8240)
- Patriot
- Titan Floaters
Check the cause
Perform a power cycle by turning the machine's ignition off, waiting a few minutes for the modules to power down completely, and turning it back on to see if the transient software glitch clears.
Inspect the HCU power supply, including the dedicated HCU fuse (e.g., F-011 40A fuse on N-Series backhoes) and the HCU relay, as voltage spikes or poor grounds can cause memory corruption.
Disconnect the HCU harness and check for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins.
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to see if the HCU can be re-flashed or updated with new firmware before condemning the hardware.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the battery isolator switch or disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical arcing.
Locate the Module
Locate the DEF Heater Control Unit / DEF Supply Module, which is typically mounted near the DEF tank assembly.
Disconnect Wiring
Carefully unplug the CAN bus and power/ground electrical connectors from the HCU.
Remove the Unit
Unbolt the mounting hardware securing the HCU to its bracket and remove the defective unit.
Install the New Unit
Mount the replacement HCU and tighten the hardware to OEM specifications.
Reconnect Wiring
Reconnect the electrical harnesses, ensuring the locking tabs click into place.
Restore Power
Reconnect the battery.
Initialize / Clear Codes
Connect the CNH EST diagnostic laptop. Clear the inactive 19880 fault code from the ECU. You may need to perform a module initialization or flash the latest firmware to the new HCU so it can communicate properly with the main ECU.
