Case IH 19881 – DEF/AdBlue Heater Control Unit (HCU): Heater control unit detected an over temperature error - internal system failure

The physical circuitry inside the module has overheated, often resulting in permanent hardware damage.

   Perform a hard reboot by turning off the tractor and disconnecting the battery to rule out a temporary software glitch.

   Check the Coolant Control Valve (CCV) to ensure it is not mechanically stuck open. A stuck valve will continuously circulate hot engine coolant, severely overheating the DEF system and surrounding electronics.

   Inspect the wiring harness at the HCU for corrosion, water intrusion, or short circuits.

   Verify that the HCU is receiving proper voltage at Terminal 30 and has a solid ground.

   Power Down

   Turn off the equipment and disconnect the battery to protect the electronic systems from voltage spikes.

   Locate the HCU

   Locate the DEF Heater Control Unit (typically mounted near the DEF tank assembly or the aftertreatment dosing module).

   Disconnect

   Carefully unplug the CAN bus and power wiring harness connectors from the HCU.

   Remove

   Unbolt the mounting hardware and remove the defective Heater Control Unit.

   Install

   Mount the replacement HCU and secure the bolts.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical harness back into the new unit and reconnect the machine's battery.

   Software Initialization

   Connect the CNH EASy diagnostic tool (or an equivalent aftermarket heavy-duty scanner). You must clear the stored inactive fault codes and initialize the new HCU so the ECM recognizes it on the CAN bus network.
