Case IH 19882 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC): Heater control unit detected an overvoltage error - internal system failure
Issue description
Critical internal system failure within the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) / AdBlue Heater Control Unit (HCU). The unit detects an internal over-voltage condition.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- Tier 4b
- Case IH Puma
- Case IH Vestrum
- Case IH Farmall
- Case IH 580SN Backhoe Loader
- Komatsu WB93R-8
- Komatsu WB97R-8
Check the cause
Check CAN Communication: Verify the CAN network lines (CAN Hi / CAN Lo) between the ECM and the Heater Control Unit. Look for timeout errors or broken cables.
Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Check the wiring harness leading to the HCU for short circuits, open circuits, or corrosion.
Verify Power and Ground: Test the voltage supply and ground circuits to the HCU to ensure it is not receiving excessive voltage from a faulty alternator or damaged harness (which could trigger the 19882 over-voltage code).
Check Fuses and Relays: Inspect the 12V Heater Control Unit relay and associated maxi/mini fuses in the service panel.
Repair steps
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery.
Prevents electrical shorts.
Locate the DEF/AdBlue Heater Control Unit (HCU) on the machine.
Typically mounted near the DEF tank or aftertreatment system.
Disconnect the main wiring harness from the HCU.
Using a multimeter, probe the harness connector to verify that power, ground, and CAN bus resistance values are within OEM specifications.
If the wiring harness, fuses, and relays test good, the HCU has suffered an internal failure and cannot be serviced internally.
As the code explicitly states.
Unbolt and remove the faulty Heater Control Unit.
Install the replacement HCU and torque the mounting hardware to spec.
Reconnect the wiring harness, ensuring the connector is fully seated and locked.
Reconnect the battery.
Connect a diagnostic scan tool to clear the 19881/19882 fault codes and run an engine aftertreatment test.
Verifies the HCU is communicating and functioning properly.
