Case IH 19884 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) or Dosing Control Unit (DCU): DEF/AdBlue Quality Sensor Temperature Plausibility Check error during startup

During a cold startup, the control module runs a plausibility check by comparing the DEF temperature reading against other known temperature values (such as ambient air or engine coolant). If the DEF temperature reading is drastically different from what the system expects, it is deemed implausible, triggering code 19884.

   Perform a cold soak temperature comparison using a diagnostic scan tool before starting the engine; compare DEF temperature to ambient air and engine coolant temperatures.

   Inspect the electrical harness and connector at the DEF tank header for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or chafed wires.

   If operating in extreme cold (below 12°F / -11°C), ensure the DEF tank heater is functioning properly, as frozen fluid can cause erratic sensor behavior.

   Check for accompanying fault codes related to DEF level or DEF quality that would confirm a total failure of the DEF header unit.

   Preparation

   Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the DEF tank. The DEF header assembly is mounted on the top of the tank.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the top of the DEF tank around the header to prevent dirt, debris, or contaminants from falling into the DEF fluid.

   Disconnect Lines

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the header. Depress the release tabs on the DEF supply and return lines and carefully pull them off. Cap the lines to prevent crystallization.

   Remove the Header

   Unscrew the locking ring or remove the mounting bolts securing the header to the tank.

   Extraction

   Carefully pull the old DEF header assembly straight up and out of the tank.

   Installation

   Insert the new DEF header assembly, ensuring the rubber O-ring/gasket is properly seated to prevent leaks. Tighten the locking ring or bolts to OEM torque specs.

   Reconnection

   Reconnect the DEF fluid lines (listen for an audible click) and plug in the electrical connector.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 19884 fault code. Start the engine and verify the code does not return.
