Case IH 19886 – Heater Control Unit (HCU): DEF/AdBlue tank temperature is too low
Issue description
Triggers when the temperature sensor inside the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) tank reports a fluid temperature that is below the acceptable operating threshold or is implausibly low compared to ambient conditions.

Check the cause
Cold Soak Temperature Comparison: Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop and check the live data for the DEF tank temperature sensor on a completely cold engine. The DEF temperature should match the ambient air temperature and the upstream/downstream exhaust sensors. If it reads implausibly low, the sensor is faulty.
Inspect the Coolant Control Valve (CCV): The DEF tank is heated by engine coolant. Check the DEF tank heating valve (CCV) to ensure it is not stuck closed. If it is stuck closed, hot coolant cannot circulate to warm the DEF, causing the low-temperature fault.
Check Coolant Lines: Verify that the coolant lines running to the DEF tank are warm to the touch when the engine is at operating temperature and the heater valve is commanded open.
Wiring and Connections: Inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connector at the DEF tank header for loose contacts, corrosion, or wire chafing, which can cause an open circuit and a false low-temperature reading.
Repair steps
Prep the Machine
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery. Drain the DEF tank into a clean container, or ensure the fluid level is pumped down below the header mounting point.
Disconnect the Header
Locate the DEF header unit at the top of the DEF tank. Carefully disconnect the main electrical connector.
Remove Fluid Lines
Disconnect the DEF suction/return lines and the engine coolant heating lines from the header. Note: Be prepared to catch a small amount of spilled coolant.
Extract the Old Sensor
Remove the mounting screws or unscrew the retaining ring holding the DEF header to the tank. Carefully pull the header assembly vertically out of the tank.
Install the New Unit
Insert the new DEF header unit into the tank, ensuring the new rubber mounting seal/O-ring is properly seated to prevent leaks. Secure the retaining ring or bolts.
Reconnect
Reattach the DEF lines, coolant lines, and the electrical connector. Ensure the coolant hoses are routed correctly (reversing them can cause continuous overheating).
Refill and Test
Refill the tank with fresh, high-quality DEF. Reconnect the battery, connect the EST diagnostic laptop, clear the 19886 fault code, and run a DEF dosing/heater system test to verify the temperature is reading correctly and the code does not return.
