Case IH 19898 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC): High pressure intercooler outlet pressure too low.

Issue description

The sensor measuring the charge air pressure at the outlet of the high-pressure intercooler is reporting a value that is lower than the expected threshold set by the engine control module. This typically indicates a physical loss of boost pressure (a boost leak), a restriction in the intercooler, a failing turbocharger, or a faulty pressure sensor/wiring circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect all charge air cooler (intercooler) piping, rubber boots, and clamps between the turbocharger, intercooler, and intake manifold for cracks, loose clamps, or blow-by soot that indicates a pressure leak.

  2. Using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), compare the reading of the boost pressure sensor with the atmospheric (barometric) pressure sensor while the engine is OFF. The readings should be nearly identical; if not, the sensor is likely skewed.

  3. Disconnect the high-pressure intercooler outlet pressure sensor. Inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins. Test the sensor wiring harness for continuity and ensure there is no short to ground.

  4. If no leaks or electrical faults are found, check the intercooler for internal restrictions or excessive oil buildup.

Repair steps

  1. Access the Sensor

    Locate the high-pressure intercooler outlet pressure sensor (boost pressure sensor) on the charge air piping or intake manifold.

  2. Relieve Pressure

    Ensure the engine is off and the system is depressurized.

  3. Remove the Sensor

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector. Unbolt or unthread the faulty sensor from its mounting port.

  4. Clean the Port

    Inspect the mounting port for carbon buildup or debris and clean it carefully to ensure the new sensor can read accurately.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Install the replacement sensor and torque it to the OEM specification. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    Connect the diagnostic tool, clear the active 19898 fault code, and run the engine under load to verify that the boost pressure reaches the expected parameters and the code does not return.
