Case IH 19908 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Error in comparing energizing time to maximum value for injector

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) continuously monitors the energizing time (pulse width), which is the exact duration the injector's solenoid is commanded open to deliver fuel. If the ECU detects that the energizing time required to maintain the target fuel delivery or rail pressure exceeds the maximum programmed threshold, it triggers this code. This typically means the injector is mechanically worn, clogged, or failing, forcing the ECU to hold it open longer than normal to get the expected amount of fuel. It can also be triggered by low fuel rail pressure or high electrical resistance in the injector wiring.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the Cylinder: Confirm whether the active code is 19908 (Cylinder 3) or 19909 (Cylinder 4) using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST).

  2. Check Fuel Pressure (low fuel supply cause): Use the diagnostic tool to monitor Actual vs. Desired Fuel Rail Pressure. If actual pressure is significantly lower than desired, inspect the fuel filters, fuel pressure regulator (M-PROP), and lift pump before condemning the injector.

  3. Electrical Testing (high resistance cause): Disconnect the injector harness and check the resistance (ohms) of the suspect injector's solenoid across its pins (test both cold and hot). Compare it to a known good cylinder.

  4. Wiring Harness Check (wiring fault cause): Inspect the wiring harness from the ECU to the injector for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins that could cause high resistance.

  5. Cylinder Contribution Test (injector failure cause): Run an automated cylinder balance/contribution test via the CNH EST to confirm the suspect injector is underperforming.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize

    Turn off the equipment and allow the engine to sit so the high-pressure fuel rail can depressurize. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Access

    Remove the engine valve cover or upper access panels as required to reach the fuel injectors.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty injector.

  4. Remove Lines

    Loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the fuel rail to the injector. (OEM guidelines state high-pressure lines are single-use and must be replaced, not reused).

  5. Extract Injector

    Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt. Carefully pull the injector from the cylinder head. If it is stuck, use an appropriate slide-hammer injector puller.

  6. Clean

    Thoroughly clean the injector bore and seat in the cylinder head. Ensure no carbon or debris falls into the cylinder.

  7. Install

    Install the new injector equipped with a new copper crush washer/seal at the tip and new O-rings.

  8. Torque

    Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to exact OEM specifications.

  9. Reconnect

    Install a new high-pressure fuel line between the rail and injector. Torque the fittings to spec. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  10. Reassemble

    Reinstall the valve cover and any removed components. Reconnect the battery.

  11. Code the Injector

    Connect the CNH EST diagnostic laptop. You MUST enter the new injector's IQA/Trim code (printed on the top of the new injector) into the ECU. This calibrates the ECU to the specific flow characteristics of the new injector, preventing future energizing time faults.

  12. Test

    Prime the fuel system, clear the fault codes, start the engine, and check for leaks.
