1991-12 - UCM

Case IH 1991-12 - UCM – UCM: Rear pilot head #7 is reporting an internal controller fault

Issue description

The pilot head (proportional actuator) on the hydraulic remote valve slice receives CAN bus signals from the tractor's controller to physically move the hydraulic spool. The "-12" failure mode identifier points to an internal electronic failure, meaning the microprocessor inside the pilot head itself has failed, lost its address, or cannot properly read its internal position transducer. The system will usually lock out the affected remote valve to prevent unintended hydraulic movement.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Steiger / Quadtrac Series
  • Magnum Series
  • Puma Series
  • Optum Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the 4-pin electrical connector at the pilot head for rear remote #7. Look for pushed pins, corrosion, or wire chafing.

  2. Perform a swap test by unbolting the pilot head from remote #7 and swapping it with a known-good pilot head from another remote (e.g., #5 or #6). If the fault code changes to the new location, the pilot head is definitively dead. If the fault remains on #7, suspect a wiring harness or UCM issue.

  3. Check for secondary codes related to the EHR system (such as spool movement too low or spool not calibrated), which often accompany a failing pilot head.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize

Turn off the tractor, cycle the remote levers to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure, and disconnect the battery isolator switch.

  2. Disconnect

Unplug the 4-pin electrical connector from the faulty pilot head on remote #7.

  3. Remove the Pilot Head

Remove the hex socket screws (typically M5 x 20mm) securing the pilot head to the hydraulic valve slice. Lift the pilot head straight up and off the valve body.

  4. Prep the Surface

Clean the mating surface on the valve slice. Remove and discard the old O-rings.

  5. Install New Parts

Place the new O-rings onto the valve body. Seat the new pilot head assembly onto the valve and torque the hex screws to OEM spec.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the 4-pin connector back into the new pilot head.

  7. Reassign Valve Addresses

Connect the Case IH EST laptop and run the valve reassignment protocol so the UCM knows which physical lever corresponds to the new pilot head on remote #7.

  8. Calibrate the Valve

Run the EHR calibration procedure using the EST laptop. This tunes the UCM to the specific flow and spool travel characteristics of the new pilot head.

  9. Clear Codes

Clear the 1991-12 fault code and test the remote for proper operation.
