Case IH 19911 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): Error in comparing energizing time to maximum value for injector in cylinder 3

Issue description

The engine control module monitors the energizing time (the exact duration the injector solenoid is commanded open to deliver fuel). The system performs a Zero Fuel Calibration by Lambda (ZFL) to adjust injections for correct fuel delivery. If the absolute energizing time required for the test injection to yield the expected engine acceleration exceeds the maximum allowable limit, this DTC is triggered. This typically indicates that the injector is mechanically failing (clogged or sticking), has excessive return leakage, has a defective internal coil, or there is a wiring/ECU issue.

Applies to these machines

  • Tier 4b
  • Case IH Tractors (Magnum, Steiger, Farmall, Workmaster series)
  • Case IH Axial-Flow Combines (e.g., 240 series, 5130, 5140)
  • Case N-Series Loader Backhoes (e.g., 580 Super N)
  • Case IH Self-Propelled Windrowers (e.g., WD2104, WD2504)

Check the cause

  1. Wiring and Connection Check: Inspect the wiring harness for the cylinder 3 injector for short circuits (high or low side to ground) or high resistance.

  2. Fuel Return Leakage Test: Warm the engine to at least 50°C (122°F). With the engine running at low idle (no load), check for excessive fuel return from the cylinder head injectors.

  3. Injector Swap Test: Swap the cylinder 3 injector with another cylinder's injector to see if the fault code follows the injector or stays on cylinder 3.

  4. ECU Verification: If the wiring is intact and the fault persists after swapping injectors, the issue may be an internal ECU failure or software corruption requiring an ECU replacement or re-flash.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect the battery

Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts and ensure the engine cannot crank.

  2. Clean the area

Clean the area around the cylinder 3 injector thoroughly to prevent debris from entering the engine or fuel system.

  3. Disconnect the electrical harness

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the cylinder 3 fuel injector.

  4. Remove the high-pressure fuel line

Loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the common rail to the cylinder 3 injector.

  5. Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt

    Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt.

  6. Extract the injector

Carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head.

  7. Clean the injector bore

Clean the injector bore, ensuring the old copper sealing washer is removed and the seating surface is spotless.

  8. Install the new/remanufactured injector

Install the new/remanufactured injector with a new copper sealing washer and O-rings.

  9. Reinstall the hold-down clamp

Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque to OEM specifications.

  10. Install a new high-pressure fuel line

Install a new high-pressure fuel line (OEMs generally recommend replacing high-pressure lines once loosened) and torque to spec.

  11. Reconnect the electrical harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

  12. Reconnect the battery and enter calibration code

Reconnect the battery, bleed the fuel system if required, and use a dealer diagnostic tool to enter the new injector's calibration code (IQA code) into the ECM.

  13. Clear the fault codes and test run

Clear the fault codes and test run the engine to verify the repair.
