Case IH 19912 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Error in comparing energizing time to maximum value for injector in cylinder 5

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) continuously monitors and adjusts the fuel injectors using a strategy called Zero Fuel Calibration (ZFL). The ZFL evaluates the energizing time required for the injectors to deliver pilot fuel injection at low idle, using learned calibration values to compensate for injector wear over time. This specific code triggers when the ECU detects that the energizing time required for the cylinder 5 fuel injector has exceeded the maximum allowable programmed threshold, indicating that the injector is likely worn, clogged, or failing mechanically.

   Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) and check for accompanying codes related to fuel rail pressure, ECU memory errors, or injector circuit open/short codes.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the ECU and the cylinder 5 injector for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.

   Use the diagnostic tool to monitor the Zero Fuel Calibration (ZFL) values and live injector energizing times at low idle to confirm the deviation on cylinder 5.

   Verify fuel quality and ensure there is no air or water in the fuel system, as poor fuel supply can force the ECU to command longer energizing times.

   Isolate the Circuit

   Disconnect the battery. Disconnect the harness at the cylinder 5 injector and at the ECU. Measure the resistance of the wiring to rule out high resistance in the circuit causing the extended energizing time.

   Replace the Injector

   If the wiring is intact and no fuel supply issues are found, the fault lies within the injector's internal solenoid or mechanical wear. Remove the valve cover (if applicable to the specific engine model) and remove the cylinder 5 fuel injector.

   Clean the Cup

   Thoroughly clean the injector cup/sleeve in the cylinder head to ensure proper seating of the new injector.

   Install New Injector

   Install the replacement injector using a new copper sealing washer and new O-rings. Torque the injector hold-down clamp to OEM specifications.

   Program the Injector

   Using the EST diagnostic tool, enter the new injector's specific calibration code (IMA code) into the Engine ECU so it can establish a correct baseline for the ZFL strategy.

   Clear the fault codes. Start the engine and let it run at low idle so the ECU can perform a new Zero Fuel Calibration. Verify that code 19912 does not return.
