Case IH 19915 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Error in comparing energizing time to minimum value for injector in cylinder 4

Issue description

The ECU detects that the electrical energizing time required to reach the minimum fuel delivery value for the specific injector has fallen outside of the acceptable programmed parameters. This usually points to a mechanically worn, clogged, or fouled injector that can no longer be calibrated electronically.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Electrical Faults: Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for other active injector codes (such as open circuits, short circuits, or H-bridge errors). If electrical codes are present, diagnose the wiring harness first.

  2. Inspect Wiring: Check the engine wiring harness and the connector at the affected fuel injector for chafing, corrosion, or high resistance.

  3. Fuel Quality Check: Inspect the fuel filter and water separator. Poor fuel quality or water contamination is a leading cause of premature injector wear leading to ZFL calibration errors.

  4. Cylinder Cutout / Leak-off Test: Use the EST to perform a cylinder cutout test or a manual injector return flow (leak-off) test to confirm the mechanical failure of the injector.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

    Ensure the engine is off and the high-pressure common rail fuel system is fully depressurized before opening any lines.

  2. Remove Components

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the affected fuel injector.

  3. Remove Fuel Lines

    Remove the high-pressure fuel injector feed pipe running from the fuel rail to the injector. (Note: OEM guidelines generally mandate replacing high-pressure fuel lines once they have been loosened).

  4. Extract the Injector

    Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bracket and carefully pull the fuel injector from the cylinder head.

  5. Clean and Prep

    Thoroughly clean the injector bore in the cylinder head, ensuring no old copper sealing washers or debris are left behind.

  6. Install New Injector

    Install the new fuel injector using a new copper sealing washer and new O-rings. Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque to OEM specifications.

  7. Reassemble

    Install a new high-pressure fuel line and reconnect the electrical harness.

  8. ECU Programming (Crucial)

    Connect the EST and enter the new injector's specific trim code (IQA code, printed on the top of the new injector) into the Engine ECU. The ECU must know the flow characteristics of the new injector.

  9. Calibration

    Clear the fault codes. Start the engine and let it run at low idle so the ECU can perform a new Zero Fuel Calibration (ZFL) and verify the repair.
