Case IH 19916 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Error in comparing energizing time to minimum value for injector in cylinder 6
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) continuously monitors the electrical pulse (energizing time) required to actuate the fuel injectors, particularly during the Zero Fuel Calibration (ZFC) or pilot injection phases. If the ECU detects that the energizing time required to lift the injector's internal armature falls below the minimum acceptable threshold, it logs this fault. This typically indicates that the injector's internal electromagnet/solenoid is shorting out, the armature is mechanically jammed, or there is a wiring harness short bypassing the injector.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness between the ECU and the cylinder 6 injector for pinched wires, chafing, or rubbed-through insulation that could cause a short to ground.
Disconnect the cylinder 6 injector and check the connector for moisture, oil intrusion, corrosion, or loose pins.
Measure the resistance (ohms) of the cylinder 6 injector solenoid across its pins (test both when the engine is cold and hot). Compare the reading to a known good injector on the same engine to check for an internal short.
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and run an injector click test or cylinder cutout test to see if the injector responds mechanically to the ECU's command.
Check for accompanying codes indicating a 'short circuit of low side to high source' for cylinder 6, which confirms an electrical failure.
Repair steps
Prep the Machine
Turn off the battery disconnect switch to cut power to the ECU. Clean the top of the engine thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the fuel system.
Gain Access
Remove the engine hood, valve cover, or any top-end components obstructing access to the cylinder 6 injector (located at the rear of the engine block on a 6-cylinder).
Disconnect Electricals
Unplug the electrical connector from the cylinder 6 injector.
Remove Fuel Lines
Loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the common rail to the injector. Immediately cap the rail fitting and the injector inlet to prevent contamination.
Remove the Injector
Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt. Carefully pull the injector out of the cylinder head. (If carbon buildup has seized the injector, a slide hammer or specialized FPT injector puller tool may be required).
Clean the Bore
Clean the injector bore in the cylinder head thoroughly, ensuring no carbon or debris falls into the combustion chamber.
Install New Injector
Fit a new copper sealing washer and a new O-ring onto the replacement injector. Seat the new injector into the bore.
Torque to Spec
Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to the exact OEM specification found in your engine's service manual.
Reassemble
Install the high-pressure fuel line (it is highly recommended to use a new line, as common rail lines deform when crushed) and torque to spec. Reconnect the electrical connector.
ECU Calibration
Reconnect the battery. Connect the Case IH EST laptop. You must enter the new injector's IQA/trim code (printed on the top of the new injector) into the ECU so it can learn the new injector's specific flow characteristics.
Final Test
Clear the fault codes, prime the fuel system, start the engine, and check for fuel leaks and smooth operation.
