Case IH 19918 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Error in comparing energizing time to minimum value for injector in cylinder 5
Issue description
The cylinder 5 fuel injector is mechanically defective, leaking, or stuck open. This is detected during a Zero Fuel Calibration (ZFC) check when the injector requires an energizing time that falls below the minimum allowable limit to achieve the expected crankshaft acceleration, indicating it is flowing too much fuel.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Tier 4b
- Case IH Steiger series
- Case IH Magnum series
- Case IH Puma / Optum series
Check the cause
Run the engine in a standard warm low-idle condition with all parasitic loads turned off (no A/C, all lamps off, no additional hydraulic/auxiliary loads)
Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor the injection quantity and cylinder balance rates
Evaluate the data to see if the injection quantity for cylinder 5 is reading below the minimum threshold and the failure is still actively detected
Repair steps
Preparation
Clean the area around the valve/rocker cover thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the engine.
Access the Injector
Remove the valve cover/rocker cover to access the fuel injectors.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical connector and the high-pressure fuel line to the cylinder 5 injector. Remove the injector hold-down clamp.
Extract the Injector
Pull the injector straight up. If the injector is seized by carbon buildup, a specialized slide-hammer puller tool may be required to extract it.
Clean the Cup
Thoroughly clean the injector sleeve/cup in the cylinder head, ensuring no carbon debris or old copper washers are left behind.
Installation
Install the new injector equipped with a new copper sealing washer and new O-rings.
Reassembly
Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line and electrical harness. Reinstall the valve cover with a new gasket.
ECU Programming
You must use the CNH EST laptop to enter the new injector's IQA/QR calibration code into the Engine ECU. This tells the ECU the exact flow characteristics of the new injector so it can fuel the cylinder accurately.
Parts you might need
(5)Fuel Injector Assembly (Cylinder 5)
Generic part name; exact OEM part number requires engine serial number
Injector Sealing Washer (Copper Crush Washer)
Usually included with a new OEM injector
Injector O-Rings
Valve Cover / Rocker Cover Gasket
High-Pressure Fuel Line
Bosch common rail guidelines often mandate replacing the high-pressure fuel line once it has been loosened, as the crush-fittings are single-use
