Case IH 2001 – TECU: Transmission Enable Relay Shorted to Power
Issue description
A shorted to power code on a transmission enable relay driver means the Transmission Electronic Control Unit (TECU) has detected voltage on the relay's control circuit when it should not be present (e.g., a short to the battery/VBATT). The TECU uses this relay to supply a voltage source and ground path to enable engine cranking or transmission engagement only when the machine is confirmed to be in neutral. If the circuit is shorted to power, the module cannot safely control the relay, often resulting in a default to Neutral, an inability to crank the engine, or a transmission limp mode.

Check the cause
Scan and Verify: Retrieve all stored and pending DTCs. Verify if the transmission gear display shows 'N' (Neutral) and check if the fault sets at power-up or while driving.
Visual Inspection: Inspect the transmission power relay, the relay socket, and the TECU connectors for water intrusion, corrosion, heat damage, or bent/spread pins.
Circuit Testing: Verify that there is no bypassed or 'jumped' wiring in the Start/Transmission Enable Relay circuit.
Circuit Testing: Check the battery voltage and main power feed for a stable 11-14.5V at the relay.
Circuit Testing: Backprobe the TECU power sense pin and relay output with a multimeter to check for a short to battery voltage (VBATT) on the control wire.
Wiggle Test: Wiggle the wiring harness between the relay block and the TECU while monitoring live voltage data to reproduce the intermittent short.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn the ignition off and disconnect the negative battery cable. Allow 2-3 minutes for the TECU to perform a complete power-down sequence.
Access the Relay Panel
Locate the transmission enable relay (often located in the cab inner roof, side console, or main fuse/relay box depending on the Case IH model).
Test/Replace the Relay
Remove the relay and test coil resistance. If the relay is internally shorted or damaged, replace it with a new OEM micro relay.
Repair the Harness (If Applicable)
If the relay is good but the control wire is shorted to a power source, trace the harness from the relay socket to the TECU. Locate the chafed wire rubbing against a 12V source and repair it using weather-sealed butt connectors and heat shrink.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive faults from the TECU history.
