Case IH 2006 – Instrument Cluster Unit (ICU) or Transmission/Armrest Controller: Radar no signal fault

Issue description

The machine's control network is not receiving a valid frequency signal from the true ground speed radar sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Check the radar sensor (usually mounted under the cab or on the lower frame pointing at the ground). Ensure the lens is not heavily caked in mud, snow, or crop debris, which can block the signal.

  2. Grounding Check: Check the ground wire running from the radar to the mounting bolt for a poor chassis ground.

  3. Harness & Connector: Inspect the wiring harness for continuity, rubbed wires, or corroded pins at the sensor connector.

  4. Bypass Test: Unplug the radar sensor. If the A-post display suddenly shows a speed reading when driving above 1 mph with the radar unplugged, the radar sensor itself (or its immediate circuit) is confirmed as the failure point.

  5. Monitor Configuration: Verify in the AFS display or ICU settings that the ground speed source is correctly configured to 'Radar' and hasn't been corrupted.

Repair steps

  1. Park and secure tractor

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and remove the key.

  2. Locate sensor

    Locate the radar sensor on the lower frame/belly of the tractor.

  3. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove hardware

    Remove the mounting hardware (typically M6 bolts/nuts) securing the sensor to its bracket.

  5. Clean mounting surface

    Thoroughly clean and scrape the metal mounting surfaces on the bracket to bare metal. The radar relies on this physical contact for a clean ground.

  6. Install new sensor

    Install the new radar sensor onto the bracket. Ensure it is oriented correctly (the angle is critical for accurate ground speed calculation; do not bend the factory bracket).

  7. Secure wiring

    Tighten the mounting hardware and reconnect the electrical harness. Secure any loose wiring with nylon zip ties to prevent snagging on crops.

  8. Test and calibrate

    Test drive the tractor. You may need to perform a radar distance calibration via the AFS monitor (driving a measured distance, usually 400 feet, so the computer can learn the pulse count) to ensure the speed readout is perfectly accurate.
