Case IH 2011 – Transmission Controller (Trans): Clutch Pot Open Circuit or short to ground

The controller is not receiving a valid signal from the clutch pedal potentiometer (rotary position sensor) because the electrical circuit is either broken (open) or the wiring has shorted out to a ground source.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the clutch potentiometer and the transmission controller for any visible breaks, rubbing, or pinched wires that could cause an open circuit or a short to ground.

   Test the connector at the clutch potentiometer to ensure the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage (typically a 5-volt reference or a 12-volt circuit).

   Inspect the bottom of the clutch pedal switch and relay to ensure they are not misadjusted or stuck.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Sensor

   Locate the clutch potentiometer, which is a rotary position sensor typically mounted on the clutch pedal assembly.

   Test/Repair Wiring

   Use a multimeter to test for continuity between the sensor harness connector and the transmission controller pins. Repair any broken wires or shorts to ground.

   Replace the Potentiometer

   If the wiring is intact and the reference voltage is correct, the potentiometer itself has failed internally. Remove the mounting hardware, unplug the sensor, and install the new OEM clutch potentiometer.

   Recalibrate the Transmission

   After replacing the clutch potentiometer or the transmission controller, you must recalibrate the transmission clutches.
