Case IH 2012 – TRANS (Transmission Controller): Master Clutch Potentiometer Short to +12 Volts or short to 5 Volt reference
Issue description
The signal voltage coming from the clutch pedal position sensor (potentiometer) is reading higher than the acceptable range. This condition is typically caused by a wiring harness shorting to a power source (+12V or the 5V reference line) or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself. When active, the tractor may stop moving and display a transmission fault.

Check the cause
Cycle the power by shutting off the tractor and restarting it to see if a temporary glitch resets.
Locate the clutch potentiometer at the clutch pedal and inspect the wiring harness and connector for chafing, melting, or exposed wires that could cause a short to +12V or the 5V reference.
Use a multimeter to check the voltage at the connector. Verify that the 5V reference is correct and that the signal wire is not receiving stray voltage when disconnected.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.
Access the Sensor
Locate the master clutch potentiometer, which is mechanically linked to the clutch pedal assembly.
Remove the Faulty Sensor
Unplug the electrical connector from the potentiometer. Remove the mounting hardware and slide the old potentiometer off the pedal linkage.
Install the New Sensor
Mount the new clutch potentiometer in the exact same orientation. Secure the mounting hardware and plug in the electrical connector.
Restore Power
Reconnect the battery and turn the tractor's key to the ON position.
Perform Calibration
You must perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure using the tractor's display monitor so the transmission controller can learn the sweep (minimum and maximum voltage values) of the new potentiometer.
